History

The Academy of Medical Assistants was founded in 2005 to provide quality education and excellence in clinical skills for students aspiring to become medical assistants and to meet the hiring demands within the medical community. In 2009, the college relocated from La Jolla to Pacific Beach and changed its name to California Medical College. Along with the change of ownership, the programs offered were expanded and the following additional national certifications were added. Medical Assistant, Medical Office Administration, Patient Care Technician, EKG Technician and Pharmacy Technician. In March of 2011, California Medical College was approved to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant and Home Health Aide Training Program.

California Medical College is licensed to operate by the Bureau for Private and Post Secondary Education, B.P.P.E. as well as the California Department of Health. National Certifications are approved by N.C.C.T. and N.H.A.

The foundation of California Medical College began from a simple principle; to help others. We do this by providing a higher standard of education by employing physicians and industry experts to teach skills that they themselves deem valuable and also readily employable. After all, a degree or certificate is only as good as the skills that accompany it. California Medical College brings together San Diego’s premier Doctors and Educational experts to provide students with the most comprehensive medical certification training program available. The primary mission of the college is to instruct students to be able to achieve competency levels qualifying them for initial employment and/or career advancement in the healthcare field. Our network of physician and community partners provides improved training and employment opportunities for our students. Our programs are designed to help students pass their national certifications the first time. The Professional Medical Technician Program offers small class sizes which are held two nights a week providing students with maximize flexibility during the day. Students are able to receive multiple certifications after only six months.

CMC’s executive management team has extensive background in Medical, Educational, Business and Financial fields. California Medical College is dedicated to delivering excellence in education along with helping to change and improve the lives of our students and their families.

What is a Medical Assistant?

Medical Assistant is an allied health care job that primarily works in the Doctor’s offices as well as medical centers and other healthcare facilities. They perform day to day duties such as medical office physical examination, basic laboratory skills and procedures, back office procedures such as taking and charting medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures. Medical Assistant also schedule appointments, provide customer service and telephone techniques, bookkeeping, record management, insurance billing and collection, diagnostic and procedural coding.

Medical Assistant students will be trained thoroughly to perform both administrative (front) and clinical (back) skills for a medical office.
Administrative skills include patient appointment scheduling, billing and coding, insurance reimbursement procedure as well as clerical procedures. A certificate is awarded after sufficient skills for placement at entry-level positions in ambulatory and medical offices is attained.
